“Poseidons Pull” Install Documentation of the Exhibition in Washington State University Pullman Museum of Art… Shot and edited by Reza Safavi, Associate Professor at WSU Pullman.
“Poseidons Pull” is an interface developed by Max Kazemzadeh with a group of international collaborators including Reza Safavi, Associate Professor at Washington State University Pullman, Joe Hicks Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Merrimount University, Haytham Naywar, Assistant Professor at American University Cairo, the Foundland Collective, Manoutch Kazemzadeh, Mark Kazemzadeh Faculty at University of Massachusetts Boston, Adnan Naseem Khan Graduate Student at University of Texas at Dallas, Stavros Didakis and more.
The goal of Poseidon’s Pull was to create a collaborative drawing with Poseidon, the “God of the Sea” and sea currents, one of the twelve Olympian deities of the pantheon in Greek mythology, whose domain is the ocean, as a gift for Greece in a challenging time.
The first step was to create a astral constellation of Poseidon and align every star point of the constellation into latitudinal and longitudinal points in the Grecian seas. Negotiating with a number of mythical images of Poseidon, a drawing was made, and then a constellation of stars that best represents the drawing of Poseidon.
Since Poseidon controls the sea currents, we initially used these constellation points as latitude and longitude points that we would sail to and then stop the boat and drift for 6 hours, with the goal of GPS tracking the drift from the original constellation star point, to the unknown drift point. Once we completed the drifts of each star point in the constellation, we also had a GPS drift path recorded. When we played back all drifts simultaneously, the constellation morphed over the 6 hour drifting period revealing a new constellation (see video on poseidonspull.com). This morph could be seen as a drawing made by the changing sea currents, and therefore by Poseidon himself since he controls those currents.
One could see this drift influenced constellation as a drawing (or visual writing) by Poseidon. This drawing could be seen as a message from Poseidon himself.
Over the course of the 6 hour drift 30 sequential drifting constellation images were collected. Each constellation was used to conduct an image search in Google Image Search. The most relevant image in the Google search for each of the 30 images was used to create a slide show message that functions as an interpretable mysterious message from Poseidon. Each collaborator recorded GPS drifts from international waterways and ocean ports accessible to them. Each of the GPS drifts are then repositioned to one of the longitude and latitude star points in the Poseidon constellation in the Ionian Sea. This is effect is a format where individuals around the world are each turning their attention to Greece.
Since Poseidon domain is the ocean and waterways, he controls the currents and therefore affects the GPS drifts of collaborators around the world, and therefore is controlling the morph of the constellation drawing in the Ionian Sea.
